Why don't Labour or Tories talk about online fraud?
The big digital hole in the main parties' manifestos
Everyone likes to complain about what’s not in the party manifestos, and I am no exception. As I expected, neither Labour nor Conservative talked in any meaningful way about either cyber-security or online fraud. Despite the fact it affects everyone, costs us billions, is getting worse, and presents an enormous opportunity for UK business.
The reason, I suspect, is because no-one knows what to do about it. But whoever wins will have to try to fix this mess from day one. On the plus side, at least they won’t be constrained by their manifesto promises I guess.
Our whole system of cyber-security is broken. The way companies think about it; the way they report it; the data companies hold about us and how; what ordinary people know and the advice they are given. There is not a single person or business that I know that isn’t deeply worried. Relatives of mine are now scared of answering their phone in case it’s a scammer. We need a totally new approach to this. (I have some ideas – I’m working on them…).
